5th Grade Decimals
A decimal is an extension of the same place-value system students already know — it just continues past the ones place instead of stopping there. Students who see decimals as "a whole different topic" often struggle with size comparisons that a decimal grid makes obvious.

Fifth grade extends place value to decimals through the thousandths place and introduces all four decimal operations, building directly on whole-number place value and operations students already have.

"I'm comparing 0.4 and 0.45. On the grid, 0.4 shades 4 full columns of 10. 0.45 shades those same 4 columns plus half of another. So 0.45 is greater, even though 0.4 has fewer digits." (Teacher shades both on grids side by side.)
We Do Example
"Let's add 2.35 + 1.6 together. Let's line up the decimal points on our place-value chart first." (Teacher and students align the digits by place value before adding.)
You Do Example
Students solve 3.2 × 0.5 independently using a decimal grid, then estimate whether their answer is reasonable before checking it.
Quick Check
One comparison problem and one operation problem, checking whether the student's placement of the decimal point matches a reasonable estimate.
If the Student Is Ready
Move to dividing decimals by decimals, or apply decimal operations in multi-step word problems involving money or measurement.
If the Student Is Not Ready
Return to decimal grids for place value and comparison, confirming the student can explain why 0.5 is greater than 0.45 before reintroducing operations.
