3rd Grade Small Group Math
Third grade is the year multiplication and division become the center of instruction, while place value and fractions are introduced as new foundations. Small groups at this grade work best when they isolate one of these strands at a time and connect it to a visual model before moving to abstract notation.

Groups work best when formed around a specific skill gap (e.g., "these students can multiply with arrays but not yet connect it to the standard algorithm") rather than a broad reading of overall math performance. A short diagnostic or exit ticket on the specific skill gives a clearer read than a general assessment.
Instructional Routines
Daily routines work best when the format stays consistent across skills — the same page layout, the same verbal cues, the same I Do → We Do → You Do sequence — so students spend their attention on the math rather than relearning a new routine every day.
Independent Practice
Independent practice should mirror the skill just taught rather than introduce a new challenge, giving the teacher a clean read on whether the day's instruction landed before moving to a new skill or regrouping students.
Progress Monitoring
A short, skill-specific check — three to five problems — at the end of a lesson or routine gives enough evidence to decide whether to move to the next skill, reteach, or regroup students for the next session.
