Elementary Small Group Math Skill Progression, Grades 1–5

Number Sense
Number sense — counting accurately, understanding what a number represents, and comparing quantities — is the foundation everything else in elementary math builds on.
Place Value
Place value — understanding that a digit's value depends on its position — underlies regrouping, multi-digit operations, and later, decimal notation. Specific number ranges vary by state and curriculum; the ranges below are common examples, not a universal standard.
Addition & Subtraction
Addition and subtraction fluency within 20, then with regrouping, sets the stage for multiplication and division reasoning in 3rd grade, and later extends into multi-digit and decimal addition/subtraction.
Multiplication & Division
Multiplication and division become the central operations in 3rd grade, then extend to multi-digit numbers and factors/multiples in 4th grade.
Fractions
Fractions are introduced as numbers in 3rd grade, extended to equivalence and like-denominator operations in 4th grade, and completed with unlike-denominator operations and multiplication/division in 5th grade.
Decimals
Decimals are introduced as an extension of place value in 4th grade and developed into full operational fluency in 5th grade.
Measurement & Data
Measurement and data grow from simple length and graphs in 1st grade to volume, angle measurement, and more complex data displays by 5th grade.
Geometry
Geometry moves from identifying shape attributes to area/perimeter, angle classification, and coordinate-plane work by the end of elementary school.
Word Problems & Reasoning
Word problems apply whichever operations are currently in focus, growing from single-step story problems to multi-step problems involving fractions and decimals.
