2nd Grade Small Group Math
Second grade extends place value to hundreds and introduces regrouping — the first time students see a procedure that only makes sense if the underlying place-value concept is solid. Small groups here should build the concept with base-ten blocks and connect it to an efficient written method, rather than starting from the written steps alone.

What Students Should Already Know
Coming into 2nd grade, students should understand tens and ones, add and subtract within 20, and count to 120. Students who are still counting by ones for larger numbers, or who cannot represent a two-digit number with tens and ones blocks, will need that foundation reinforced before regrouping instruction can take hold.
Common Misconceptions
- Treating regrouping as an arbitrary "borrowing" rule instead of understanding it as exchanging value between places — see our framework page for how we approach this conceptually.
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger digit in each column regardless of which number is on top.
- Confusing the value of a digit with its face value — for example, treating the "3" in 30 the same as the "3" in 3.
- Reading the equal sign as "the answer comes next" instead of a balance between two equal amounts.

How to Structure a Small-Group Lesson
A 15–20 minute 2nd grade small-group block follows I Do → We Do → You Do: a short model of regrouping with base-ten blocks (3–4 minutes), guided practice building and recording the same process together (6–8 minutes), and independent practice on a similar problem (5–8 minutes), ending with a quick check.
Assessment & Grouping
Group students by the specific step where regrouping breaks down — some students understand the concept but make procedural errors, while others don't yet understand why regrouping is necessary at all. These call for different instruction, even at the same "level."
Instructional Routines
A consistent routine — build it with blocks, represent the exchange on a place-value chart, then connect it to an efficient written method — helps students see the connection between the concrete model and the written procedure every time. Common Core places fluency with the standard addition/subtraction algorithm in 4th grade; 2nd grade work centers on concrete models, drawings, and place-value strategies connected to a written method.
Independent Practice
Independent practice should include the same problem type just modeled, with a place-value chart or blocks available, so the teacher can see whether the student can apply the process without support.
Progress Monitoring
A short check with two or three regrouping problems is usually enough to tell whether a student is ready for more complex regrouping (across zeros, for example) or needs another round with concrete models.

Until they can explain, in their own words, why they're exchanging a ten for ten ones (or the reverse) — not just complete the steps correctly.

This is common and usually means the concept is there, but the recording process needs more guided practice — a place-value chart can bridge that gap.
