Measurement and data in 3rd grade connects directly to the multiplication and division students are building elsewhere — reading a scaled graph, for instance, requires understanding what each unit on the scale represents.

Small-Group Teaching Sequence

"This graph's key says each picture equals 2 votes. This bar has 3 pictures, so that's 3 × 2 = 6 votes." (Teacher explicitly connects the key to the multiplication needed to read the graph.)

We Do Example

"Let's find the elapsed time from 2:15 to 2:50 together. Let's count by 5s on the number line from 2:15." (Teacher and students jump forward together in five-minute intervals.)

You Do Example

Students answer three questions from a new scaled bar graph independently, including one question requiring them to compare two categories.

Quick Check

One elapsed-time problem and one graph-reading problem, checking whether the student references the scale/key rather than just counting bars or clock hands directly.

Move to building their own scaled graph from a data set, choosing an appropriate scale.
