3rd Grade Multiplication & Division

Multiplication means putting together a number of equal groups, and division means splitting a quantity into equal groups or equal-sized shares. Students need both meanings — not just the times tables — before facts and algorithms will make sense.

Multiplication and division are the central focus of 3rd grade math, replacing addition and subtraction as the primary operations students build fluency with. This understanding is the foundation for multi-digit multiplication and division in 4th grade.

Small-Group Teaching Sequence

I Do Example

"I have 4 groups of 3 counters. That's 4 × 3. Let me build an array: 4 rows of 3. Counting all the counters, I get 12. So 4 × 3 = 12." (Teacher builds the array while narrating.)

We Do Example

"Let's build 5 × 6 together as an array. How many rows? How many in each row?" (Teacher and students build the array together, then connect it to the multiplication fact.)

You Do Example

Students solve 24 ÷ 4 independently using equal groups or an array, then explain whether they were finding the number of groups or the size of each group.

Quick Check

One multiplication and one division problem, checking whether the student can represent each with a visual model, not just state a memorized fact.

If the Student Is Ready

Move to multiplying by multiples of 10, or begin building fact fluency through short, repeated daily practice.

If the Student Is Not Ready

Return to equal groups and skip-counting, confirming the student can build and count groups accurately before reintroducing arrays.
